The Complete Diamond Guide
Understanding diamonds is essential for making an informed purchase. Our expert guide covers everything from the 4Cs to diamond shapes, helping you select the perfect stone.
The 4Cs of Diamond Quality
Established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the 4Cs provide a universal language for evaluating diamond quality.
Carat Weight
Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. While larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have vastly different values based on the other three Cs.
Cut Quality
Cut is the most critical factor in a diamond's beauty. It determines how light interacts with the stone, creating brilliance (white light reflection), fire (spectral colors), and scintillation (sparkle). Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor.
Clarity
Clarity measures the presence of inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external). The scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye.
Color
Diamond color grades range from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds (D-F) are the rarest and most valuable. Near-colorless diamonds (G-J) offer excellent value with minimal visible color.
Diamond Shapes
Each diamond shape has unique characteristics that affect its brilliance, fire, and overall appearance.
Round Brilliant
The most popular choice, offering maximum brilliance with 58 facets
Princess
A contemporary square shape with exceptional fire and brilliance
Cushion
Romantic rounded corners with larger facets for stunning light play
